If lead is so heavy, why is it a soft metal?

I guess I don’t understand — if its so dense and heavy, doesn’t that mean the molecules are packed closely together? Then why is it “soft”? I’ve already read the wikipedia article on lead, and it hasn’t answered this question — so I leave it to the resident chemists to explain!

First off lead is not made up of molecules but a sea of free electrons and positive lead ions.
It is heavy because the atoms are very close (no gramatical error) packed which means that it is dense. it is however, soft becase the atoms are able to slid over each other easily.
