I know it’s silly but it’s for Defile de Mode :]

Estelle is wearing a short black cropped jacket over a black ruffled halter dress. Around her neck is a gorgeous blue pendant drop necklace. How stylish! Her shoes are high heeled black boots with buckles. These are all the rage on the runways of Paris! Her first bracelet is silver, her second blue and gold. Marvelous, simply marvelous. This has been Estelle!

Carole wears a navy blue cardigan with stripes on one arm over a red and white striped t-shirt with a stylish design. Under her denim shorts are black leggings, the hot new trend for Spring/Summer 2009! Her silver necklace is shaped like the Eiffel Tower, ooh la la. And her boots are brown cowboy-style shoes. This has been Carole!

Chloe is wearing a long turquoise shirt with an intricate neckline. Wonderful, don’t you agree?

Paris has been the international capital of style for three hundred years. Although challenged by other fashion cities such as Milan, London and New York, Paris remains special. This fascinating book shows that the strength of the French fashion industry rests on the depth and sophistication of its fashion culture. Revised and updated, Paris Fashion is reprinted here in paperback for the first time. More than just a history of famous designers and changing styles, the book is about fashion as a cultural ideal and a social phenomenon. By focusing on a ”case study” of Paris, Steele provides brilliant insights into the significance of fashion in modern urban society. The author, an internationally recognized authority on the history of fashion, is the author of many books, including Fashion and Eroticism, Women of Fashion: 20th-Century Designers, Fetish: Fashion, Sex & Power, and Fifty Years of Fashion: New Look to Now. y

Japanese Revolution in Paris Fashion

Japanese Revolution in Paris Fashion

Paris is renowned as the greatest fashion capital in the world. It has a rigid and tightly controlled system that non-western designers have difficulty penetrating. Yet a number of the most influential Japanese designers have broken into this scene and made a major impact. How? Kawamura shows how French fashion has been both disturbed and strengthened by the addition of outside forces such as Kenzo Takada, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo, and Hanae Mori. She considers many other key questions the fashion industry should be asking itself. Does the system facilitate or inhibit creativity? Has it become preoccupied with the commercial projection of product images rather than with the clothing itself? And what direction will French fashion take without Saint Laurent, Miyake and Kenzo? This is the first in-depth study of the Japanese revolution in Paris fashion and raises provocative questions for the future of the industry.

This book provides a concise and much-needed introduction to the sociology of fashion. Most studies do not make a clear distinction between clothing and fashion. Kawamura argues that clothing is a tangible product whereas fashion is a symbolic cultural product. She debunks the myth of the genius designer and explains that fashion is not about clothes but is a belief. There is an institutional structure, ignored by many fashion theorists, that has shaped and produced the fashion phenomenon. Kawamura further shows how the structural nature of the fashion system works to legitimize designers” creativity and can make them successful. Newer fashion cities, such as Milan and New York, are the product of the fashion system that originated in Paris. Without that systemic structure, fashion culture would not exist.
