Makeup tips: How to create that smoky eyes look

Smoky eye makeup is simply beautiful and, despite common belief, extremely easy to achieve with the right know-how. The following suggestions will take you right along the road to your new sexy, sultry eyessmokin’!The Smoky-eyed look is intended to be quite striking, but can be applied as lightly or heavily as you wish. Often worn in black or slate, smoky eyes can be in any colour. The term smoke’ does not refer to colour, but rather the application. Multiple colours can be used. For example, black eyeshadow can be topped with silver to soften the effect.

ToolsThe first step in achieving a smudge-free smoky eye, is a small, pointed make-up brush (the sponge-tip applicators provided with eyeshadow palettes do not provide the precise application that make-up brushes do). Brushes do not have to be pricey; synthetic ones are very inexpensive. And a cheap alternative to professional make-up brushes are art brushes. Another medium-sized brush is essential for blending on the lower lids.ProductsMatte powder eyeshadows are best for achieving a smoky eye, as they hold their colour well and blend easily.Technique

To begin your smoky eye, shadow is applied to the entire lower lids with a medium shadow brush, blending up to the socket line and to the outer corner of the eye. The line is blended slightly but remains strong along the eye crease. Then dip the small eyeliner brush into the powder eyeshadow, picking up a small amount. Tap the brush tip onto the back of your hand to ensure there is not too much powder on it. Draw it along the lower lash line; strong from the outer corner, toward the inner corner, where it begins to soften slightly. It may be easier to begin at the outer corner of the eye and sweep inwards. Do this in small strokes, applying lightly at first – you can always add more if desired.

Tip: apply extra face powder beneath your eyes before you begin – any excess eyeshadow that falls underneath your eyes can then be swept away easily with a powder brush.

Then, follow with eyeliner and/or mascara as desired. Voila!Colours that look particularly great applied in a smoke technique include black, shades of grey, chocolate brown, silver and shades of blue, purple and green. However, any colours can be used on their own or in conjunction with other shades.And lastly, remember to blend, blend blend! Think soft, billowing clouds of smoke, which means no harsh lines.
