How do fashion designers stay in business?

I was flipping through a fashion magazine I found at work. I’m talking Prada jackets for $10,000, Marc Jacobs shoes for $2300, purses for $4000. The USA population is 308 million people. I would think there are only about 5 million people that can afford outrageous stuff like that. So how do these designers stay in business? Paris Hilton ‘wannabes’ charge that stuff on their credit cards and then file bankruptcy a few years later and generally get to keep the stuff. The fashion designer doesn’t lose money – the credit card company gets to ‘eat’ the loss. Also, even though ‘only’ 5 million people in the USA who might actually be able to really afford that stuff, that’s enough customers to keep a fashion designer’s business going.
