A research on OBESITY and SOCIAL ATTITUDES revealed th stereotypes, stigma& discrimination the obese people…?
face in society and the negative attitudes generate in them. The obese people are being discriminated at home, in education, employment, social circles and are cast as lazy, gluttonous, adamant, mean and wicked. They are least preferred as sexual partners/spouses and ranked far below the physically challenged and mentally ill.
My Question : Is it so because of the ‘Fashion Shows’ showing only ’slim’ is the beautiful?
Is it because our movies/TV serials projecting these obese people as Comedians/Excess Eaters, etc?
Why this stigma attached to them and who is responsible?
Source : Newspaper “The Hindu” Madurai Edition dated 11/10/2009.
they themselves are responsible.
they’re cast as lazy, gluttonous, adamant, mean and wicked simply because they ARE. (except for few who gain weight due to medical conditions).
physically challenged, mentally ill, they cant change it but obese people can change they way they look but they’re too lazy to do it. they’re ignorant of both their health and the perspective others have on them. haha i’ll certainly not blame fashion shows because first of all, what they show in fashion show is not reality.
and it’s not because tv people are making fun of fat people.
obesity is a health condition, and one should have the initiative to correct it. and it’s not even hard. just follow a strict diet (diet is not fasting..) and do some simple exercise is enough.
i would like to point our here the attitude of indian women. once they get married, they dont pay attention to their looks because they’re just too ‘comfortable’ and feel ’secured’ because they’ve already got ‘one’ so dont have to maintain the looks to attract men anymore. worse, after giving birth. they have this notion that ‘oh im already a mother, i already have a child, so i should start dressing up like a granny’. and they dont pay attention to their diet too. this attitude leads to obesity, and then these women blame the husbands when they betray them. how sad…. there’s still lack of awareness among indian women on grooming and wellbeing.
i was 48kg when i got married. after giving birth, i was a whopping 68kg! just after 7 months, i was back at 50kg and am still 50kg. all i had to do is cut short on my meals, fast after 7pm, cut down on sugar, and walk about 600-800m daily. very simple.
